eSIM buying checklist (refund, validity, activation)

3 min read · Updated September 13, 2026
Checking these six things before you pay can prevent common mishaps: your phone's compatibility, coverage for your destination, allowance and validity, when it activates, whether tethering is allowed, and the refund policy. In particular, if you miss "when the validity period starts" and "when activation happens," the plan can expire before you ever use the data.

6 checks before you pay

  • ① Your phone's compatibility — eSIM support + no carrier lock
  • ② Coverage — whether it includes every country/region you visit
  • ③ Allowance and validity — total GB, how many days, and whether it carries over
  • ④ Activation timing — whether it's "immediately on purchase" or "on connecting locally"
  • ⑤ Tethering — whether it's allowed, if you plan to share via hotspot
  • ⑥ Refund — whether a refund is possible before/after install, and the conditions

The most common mistake

Some plans start their validity period from "purchase/install," not from "activation." If you install and activate long before you leave, the period can shrink or expire before your trip. For most plans it's safer to only "install" in advance and "activate (start using data)" locally, but always check the guidance for each product.

Check the refund terms

Refund terms differ by product and provider, and often depend on whether you've installed or used it. Before you go any further with installing or using it after purchase, check your order details and the refund terms, and if you bought the wrong one, contact the provider.

FAQ

If I buy in advance, does the validity period shrink?
It depends on the product. If the period starts "from activation," buying in advance is fine, but if it starts "from purchase/install," it's safer to buy just before your trip and activate it locally.
I bought the wrong one — can I get a refund?
It depends on the product's refund terms. Before going any further with installing or using it, check your order details and the refund guidance and contact the provider.
When is the best time to activate?
For most plans it's safer to only "install" over Wi-Fi before departure, then turn on data roaming after arriving locally to "activate and use" it. But check the product's activation and validity policy first.
