iPhone eSIM setup and data settings

4 min read · Updated September 16, 2026
On iPhone you install via "Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data) → Add eSIM → Use QR Code." Depending on the iOS version, "Add eSIM" may be shown as "Add Cellular Plan," but the flow is the same. After installing, set the data line to the travel eSIM and turn on data roaming for that line.

Install steps

  • Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)
  • Add eSIM (or Add Cellular Plan) → Use QR Code
  • Scan the provider's QR code → line added
  • Naming the line "Travel" or similar makes it easier to manage

Essential settings after installing

  • Set the "Cellular Data" line to the travel eSIM
  • Travel eSIM line → turn on "Data Roaming"
  • Keep your default line as your existing number so calls and texts come through on it

Install directly via link (iOS 17.4 or later)

On iOS 17.4 or later (iPhone XR/XS and later), tapping the "install link" the provider gives you goes straight to the eSIM install screen without a QR code. Usually you just tap the link in the purchase confirmation email or on the provider's page from your phone. Whether a link is supported differs by provider, so if there isn't one, use the QR or manual method below.

Differences by iOS version

Depending on the iOS version, labels like "Add eSIM" and "Add Cellular Plan" may differ slightly. For reference, "eSIM Quick Transfer" is a feature that moves a line from an old device to a new iPhone, which is different from installing a new travel eSIM in a provider app. Even if the menu names differ, the overall "Cellular → add a line" flow is the same.

FAQ

I don't see "Add eSIM."
Check your exact model number, the region it was sold in, and your iOS version. Rather than concluding it's unsupported just because the menu is missing, it's more accurate to also check Apple's support information for your region. See the "supported phones" guide.
Data isn't going through the travel eSIM.
Go to Settings → Cellular and check that the "Cellular Data" item is set to the travel eSIM, and that data roaming is on for that line.
Can I install without a QR code?
Yes. On iOS 17.4 or later (iPhone XR/XS and later), you can tap the install link the provider gives you to install directly without a QR code. If there's no link, you can install directly through the provider app, or use manual entry (SM-DP+ address and activation code) as an alternative.
